Sail Me To The Moon.

I need to spend more time on Kickstarter and other crowd funding sites.  More ambitious citizen scientist projects are getting funded all the time.

One of the latest projects is LUNARSAIL: An Open-Source Cubesat & Solar Sail Lunar Orbiter.  This project plans to use a solar sail to transport a tiny cubesat to the Moon.

The project exceeded its target of $11,000 and raised a total of $15,000.  This will give the team some much needed breathing room.


The next phase is the proposal to NASA to get the Lunarsail onboard a mission so that it can be launched.

The project is the brainchild of the Aerospace Research & Engineering Systems Institute, Inc. (Ares Institute), a non-profit organization founded to promote space exploration and STEM education through hands-on research projects.

I really find it interesting that for a relatively low cost, project such as this are able to be imagined and carried out buy small groups.  It is too bad that the shuttle program is no longer active.  Can you imagine how many cubesats would fit in the cargo bay?
